BIOGRAPHY:
Ian North was born March 24,
1952 in New York City. Ian, a self
taught artist, grew up on Long
Island where he created his first
serious art piece in 1970. He
then spent the next twenty years
in the music business recording
five albums as a singer/song
writer. While living in London in
1977 and 1978, he became
serious about the creation of fine
art and took inspiration from
such artists as Robert
Rauschenberg, Joseph Cornell,
Antoni Tapies and Basquiat. It
wasn't until 1992 that he
consistently began to create
mixed media assemblages and
abstract acrylics.
Ian says "Each piece has
meaning, however, while a work
is in progress, I try not to think
about what the meaning is, so as
to hopefully tap into my sub-
conscious and thereby learn
something about myself. I rely
on the viewer to tell me what it
means. In this way the viewer
adds quite possibly the most
important element to the work:
whatever you think it means,
you're right".
